Red Bull Racing has officially introduced its final major development package of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, confirming that the bulk of the team's engineering resources has now shifted toward its 2027 car.

Speaking during Thursday's FIA team principals' press conference in Baku, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies confirmed that the updates brought to Round 15 represent the team's last comprehensive aerodynamic overhaul of the current campaign. Both Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar—the latter returning to race action after missing three rounds with a wrist injury—are running the identical specification around the Baku City Circuit.

The Technical Overhaul Brought to Baku

According to official FIA technical submissions ahead of the weekend, Red Bull declared five distinct updates for the RB22:

  • Floor Body Geometry: A re-profiled floor surface designed to extract higher local aerodynamic load while preserving airflow stability under high and low ride-height transitions.
  • Revised Sidepods: Reprofiled sidepod contours to better direct oncoming air toward the diffuser and rear assembly, complementing the revised floor.
  • Mirror Assembly Tweaks: Adjusted mirror mountings and housings to clean flow structures traveling along the car's upper flanks.
  • Diffuser Adjustments: Refined expansion profiles aimed at stabilizing aerodynamic balance across varying speeds.
  • Low-Drag Cooling Packaging: Circuit-specific cooling and duct adjustments tailored to the low-drag demands of Baku's 2.2-kilometer main straight.

The package, designed under technical director Pierre Waché, aims to address the car's balance inconsistencies that have persisted across high-speed and technical street layouts throughout the season.

Resource Transition to 2027

Mekies explained that the timing of the Baku deployment marks the natural conclusion of Red Bull's primary 2026 aerodynamic development pipeline.

"It is most probably our last significant package," Mekies stated in Baku. "We have switched a significant part of our resources, a very large majority of our resources, to next year's car. Now, it doesn't mean that we don't look at this season anymore. At first, we are still chasing our first win and that's an important target for the team. And secondly, as you know, the regulations have only very little changes for next year and there are huge opportunities for us to continue to learn in the remaining races, to make sure we arrive as prepared as we can for next year".

Because the fundamental technical framework remains largely stable heading into 2027, Red Bull intends to treat track time across the final ten rounds as live validation for next year's baseline concepts, rather than manufacturing further bespoke packages for 2026.

Championship Stakes for Red Bull

The decision to freeze major RB22 development arrives amid a challenging transitional season for the Milton Keynes squad. Following Round 14, Red Bull sits fourth in the Constructors' Championship on 230 points, trailing leaders Mercedes (503 points), Ferrari (358 points), and McLaren (306 points).

In the Drivers' Championship, Verstappen sits in sixth position with 145 points and zero Grand Prix victories to date. Hadjar, whose contract alongside Verstappen for 2027 was reaffirmed on Wednesday, occupies eighth place with 71 points. If Red Bull fails to reach the top step of the podium across the remaining ten rounds of 2026, it would represent the team's and Verstappen's first entirely winless Formula 1 season since 2015.

With no further major hardware packages planned after Baku, Red Bull's prospects of avoiding a winless year will hinge entirely on extracting performance from this RB22 configuration against an in-form field.
