Alpine Appoints Former Mercedes Technical Boss Mike Elliott as Chief Technical Officer
Alpine has officially announced the appointment of former Mercedes technical director and chief technical officer Mike Elliott as its new Chief Technical Officer, effective immediately ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The move marks Elliott’s return to the Enstone-based squad, where he previously served as principal aerodynamicist between 2008 and 2012 during the Renault and Lotus eras. In his new role, Elliott takes full charge of all technical operations at Enstone, with Executive Technical Director David Sanchez reporting directly to him.
Key Details of the Appointment
The Enstone outfit confirmed the leadership restructure on Friday, establishing a revised reporting line designed to streamline technical decision-making:
- Role: Chief Technical Officer (CTO) overseeing all factory technical operations and car performance departments.
- Reporting structure: Executive Technical Director David Sanchez reports directly to Elliott.
- Timeline: Elliott assumes responsibilities with immediate effect, prior to track running at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
- Background: Over two decades of top-tier Formula 1 experience, including a key role in Mercedes' eight consecutive constructors' world championships between 2014 and 2021.
Elliott originally entered Formula 1 with McLaren in 2000 before moving to Enstone in 2008. He subsequently joined Mercedes in 2012 as Head of Aerodynamics, later stepping up to Technical Director in 2021 and Chief Technical Officer in 2023 before his departure later that year.
Rebuilding Enstone’s Technical Leadership
Alpine’s technical group has undergone extensive reshaping over the past two seasons. By placing Elliott at the helm of the technical hierarchy alongside Sanchez, Alpine pairs two experienced engineering figures from recent championship-winning programmes. Sanchez, who joined Alpine’s senior leadership after tenures at Ferrari and McLaren, will continue directing design and concept execution, while Elliott focuses on macro technical strategy, departmental integration, and future platform development.
The appointment comes at a crucial phase in the 2026 championship. Following 14 rounds, Alpine sits sixth in the Constructors' Championship with 68 points, trailing fifth-placed RB F1 Team (77 points) and holding a clear margin over Haas F1 Team (21 points). On the drivers' side, Pierre Gasly occupies 10th in the standings with 41 points, leading the team's on-track charge alongside Franco Colapinto.
Immediate Focus and What Happens Next
Elliott’s immediate remit involves steadying engineering operations trackside and at the factory as Formula 1 heads to the Baku City Circuit. While day-to-day trackside execution in Azerbaijan remains guided by the existing race engineering core and Sanchez, Elliott will oversee the technical roadmap for the remaining rounds of 2026 and guide early groundwork for upcoming technical cycles.
With the midfield fight between Alpine and RB F1 Team closely poised heading into the final stretch of the season, Enstone's new leadership structure will face an immediate operational test on the streets of Baku.
